This definition (of obsolete instruments)implies that the magnetic field is constant. This is at variance with the principle of most instruments which were in use till 1980's (with varying magnetic fields instead of variable frequency). The definition should mention that the ions are brought to resonance by scanning either the frequency (rarely) or the magnetic field (mostly).
