Abstract

Note for IUPAC Recommendations

Reprinted below is a list of recommendations for nomenclature and symbolism for [[mass spectroscopy]] which was published by IUPAC in 1991 (J.F.J. Todd, Pure Appl. Chem., 63 (1991) 1541). These recommendations were drawn up over an extended period, and involved extensive consultation with journal editors and other experts; the Nomenclature Committee of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry was also closely involved. At the same time a set of recommendations on vacuum technology, issued by the American Vacuum Society, was appended because there appeared to be no IUPAC document on this subject in existence and there is an obvious relevance of many of these terms to mass spectrometric experimentation. A detailed account of the development of, and earlier references relating to, mass spectroscopy are given in the Preamble of the document.

In revising earlier recommendations and introducing new ones the IUPAC Subcommittee on Mass Spectroscopy attempted to reflect and codify existing accepted terminology rather than invent new and "untried" terms: any attempt at standardisation will only work if the majority of the practitioners of the subject finds the definitions to be acceptable. Authors are recommended to use the nomenclature when preparing manuscripts and lectures, and to contact the undersigned with any suggested changes for the future.
