Electrons produced following collision of an ion with a [[conversion dynode]] strike a phosphorous screen to produce a burst of photons.  Cascade amplification of these photons, in a manner similar to electron amplification within an electron multiplier results in an increased signal that is converted into a measurable current.  Photomultiplier are sealed units that prevent contamination and hence increase the lifetime of the unit.
