"Ionization cross section" in the field mass spectrometry commonly refers to electron ionization, not to photo-ionization. Electron ionization and Photoionization should therefore be defined separately if necessary.

This is a measure of the probability that a given ionization process will occur when an atom or molecule interacts with a photon. (not applicable to other ionization methods?)

Other types of ionization
There is a cross-section for any gas phase ion molecule interaction. Also electron ionization. This term should be defined in general terms
