I agree with Jean-Fran??????????????ois GAL [re above], Thermal Ionization these days also increasingly uses Silica Gel and other oxides as the emitting agent. Use of the term "Metal" should be avoided in the definition.

Some salts or other solids (beta-eucriptites ?...) give ions at elevated T, usually positive metal ions. Suggested modification: Ion emission from a hot surface. Samples may be deposited on a metal filament. "Thermoionization" is also used. I don't know if there is a difference.
