This term is used to describe the formation of any ionized species in the gas phase when a solid or liquid material is irradiated with a laser beam of which wavelength is absorbed by the material itself. In order to be distinguished from the term [[MALDI|matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization]], the term [[direct laser desorption/ionization]] is also used.
The formation of gas-phase ions by the interaction of a pulsed laser with a solid or liquid material.
