Abstract

In view of the multiple aspects of organic mass spectrometry and of its still developing character it is the editorial policy of OMS to give the authors the widest possible latitude in style and choice of presentation of their data. For this reason no rules for the compilation of manuscripts have been issued. Due to the fast development during recent years, however, definitions, symbols etc. are far from being uniform and sometimes they may even have a double meaning (e.g. α-cleavage). In order to avoid the necessity of re-defining in each paper frequently used abbreviations and symbols, a list is offered here which draws upon the convention by Shannon (Proc. Royal Australian Chem. Inst. 328 (1964).) and the usage in recent papers and monographs. Authors following the proposals compiled in this list do not need to re-define them in their papers submitted to OMS; usage in a differing sense should, however, be indicated.
