DRAFT DEFINITION
Protonated molecule
An ion formed by interaction of a neutral molecule with a proton, and represented by the symbolism [M + H]+. The term 'protonated molecular ion' is not recommended as it suggests a different species formed by the association of a proton with a molecular ion. Likewise, the ambigous terms 'quasi-molecular ion' or 'pseudo-molecular ion' should be avoided.
Considered between 2004 and 2006 but not included in the 2006 PAC submission
This is an unofficial draft definition presented for information and comment.
