Unstable ion

A nascent, transient ion with high content of internal energy (sufficiently excited) which dissociates, isomerizes or reacts spontaneoulsy and immediately after its formation.
Orange Book Entry
An ion that is sufficiently excited to dissociate within the ion source.
Gold Book Entry
An ion which is sufficiently excited to dissociate within the ion source.
